In an earlier post, I discussed that I wanted a barn door in our house to cover an awkward area where we have two doors side by side. The smaller door is for a coat closet, that will be closed 99.9% of the time. The larger door leads down the basement stairs, and it needs to be cracked open 100% of the time because of our little furbaby.
I was not a fan of how the doors looked, all cramped next to each other on such a long wall…and I definitely didn’t want to have a door that would be cracked open all the time, or opened up all the way showing our ugly basement stairway. Insert our barn door idea here to solve our problem.
After we gave a bunch of pictures and described many designs to our contractor, he was able to build our door! The track I ordered from here arrived several weeks ago, and was patiently waiting in our basement to be installed. Now, the unique request we made is one of my favorite things in our house {although I have a hard time narrowing down what things are NOT my favorites haha}.
To refresh your memory…this is what the area used to look like, pre-barn door.
View from the front door.
View from the hallway corner by the kitchen.
View from the living room area towards the awkward doors.
View from the dining area.
And again...after more progress.
And, yet again!
Last time.
And here is what it looks like now!!!
Yes, our coat closet is a serious disaster right now. Cleaning/organizing it is on my mile long to-do list!
I’m seriously in L-O-V-E! I think it’s perfect for that space and for our home. And believe me…I get that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. I know many of you may be thinking “what the heck?!?!”, but to me and the hubby, it’s awesome.
Anyone else have any outside-of-the-box ideas that ended up working perfectly for your home???
What a stunning transformation!
ReplyDeleteI'm in LOVE! This looks fantastic! So much cleaner than two normal doors and a great conversation piece! So far it's probably one of my favourites in your house too!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! This looks so great! And it adds so much to that entire wall, not just the door ways!
ReplyDeleteSeriously?!? You are guys are amazing. That is all.
ReplyDeleteThat looks terrific! I am completely jealous of your house!
ReplyDeleteAlso, love the couch. It looks super comfy!
Love the barn door, what a great idea.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Becky! So glad you stopped by! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Diana...I feel the exact same way!!
Aw, thank you very much, Ashley! It definitely works well on that wall since it's so long and had nothing going on, but those two doorways before.
Kelly...you are too sweet!! Thank you so much!
Thanks Brandi! I have to admit...me and my hubby are IN LOVE with our couch. It has modern lines, but is still extremely comfy. I've taken quite a few naps on it already haha.
Thank you so much, Kim...so happy you stopped by! :)
That is awesome! I love your creativity! We're putting one in our basement, so I get the whole barn door thing. Your house looks beautiful.
ReplyDeleteOMG. LOVE! Where did you get the barn door?!?
ReplyDeleteTHAT is the coolest thing ever! I jumped over from Better After and am now going through all your posts. Your gray on the wall is beautiful. What is the name/brand? Can't wait to read on!

Thank you so much, Kirsty! It's such an awesome feature to have in your home. Good luck with yours! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Stefanie Ann!! I showed my contractor pictures of what I wanted and then we explained in detail what we wanted and he bought the materials and put it together for us. But I found and purchased the track myself, and got/installed the handle myself. Hope that helps! If not, just ask away! :)
Thanks Rebecca!! I love that gray too...it's a perfect shade. It is Behr's Gentle Rain.
Followed your link over from Buffalo Roam because I just HAD to see your barn door! I really think I need to find a spot to add one, I just love the character they add. Nice job.

Love the giant barn door. Do you have any problems with it rubbing on the baseboards when you slid it or is there something on the back to help with that?
ReplyDeleteThanks Kala! No, we don't have any problems with that. The door has a small gap between it and the baseboards. Since the track was attached to a piece of wood on the wall, it served as a spacer, so that we have none of those issues. :)
DeleteYou are right - this is fantastic! Love interior barn doors, but this one is especially fabulous. I think we are adding one to our powder room now. Thanks for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteOh, that'll be awesome! Can't wait to see it! :)
Deleteonly just found your blog - love the changes - and absolutely LOVE the barn door. (I have many pinned on pinterest!!)

Thank you so much, Cheryl! So glad you found me and are following! Xo!
DeleteWhat a creative solution. I'm sold on the look! Well done!
ReplyDeleteI seriously LOVE that door. I'm trying to convince my husband to put a larger barn door in our playroom area, but he is unsure about the size since we'd need to do a big one...yours seems to be similar to one that I'd want to put in! I'm definitely going to show him this post. How wide is your door? Beautiful living room too, by the way!
ReplyDelete-Katie
Thank you so much, Katie! Definitley show him our blog...hopefully it will help to persuade him. ;-) Our door is very wide, over 5 feet. {I'm not sure of the exact width. I'd have to check when I get home.}
DeleteThanks again!!
What a great idea! I have always been fascinated with the use of barn door in a residential unit. With the right color and design, it goes a long way accentuating the beauty of a home. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks so much! :)
DeleteWhat color grey paint did you go with? I have 20,000 different colors and need to choose 1. Thank you!! It looks great!!
ReplyDeleteThe walls were Behr's Gentle Rain. Hope that helps! :)
DeleteHi Gabbi!! I love this barn door look. Very innovative! I was thinking to paint my bedroom Behr Gentle Rain as well. Is your finish a matte finish or eggshell? & Do you think it would look good in a smaller bedroom? Thanks in advance!’
